The value of connection in PR

Positive Communications Managing Director Tracy Posner shares her insights about the underrated value of human connection in PR:

“While at the Align CoLab event this week I realised that one of the most underrated skills in PR isn't writing. It's having conversations and connecting people.

Yes, strong storytelling matters. Securing media coverage matters. Building a brand narrative matters. But after years working in communications and public relations, I've come to believe that one of our greatest superpowers is our ability to bring people together.

The best PR professionals don't just create content. They create connections.
That was brought home to me once again at Align CoLab. We've had the privilege of working with Align Technology for 14 years, and it was incredible to reconnect with so many doctors who have been part of the Align journey for just as long. Seeing relationships which have grown and evolved over more than a decade reminded me that lasting partnerships are built on trust, shared experiences and genuine human connection. Those long-standing relationships are every bit as valuable as any campaign or piece of coverage. Behind every successful collaboration, customer relationship or career opportunity are people who were introduced at the right moment.
I've lost count of the number of times a simple introduction has led to a new client, a business partnership, a speaking opportunity, a media interview or even a lifelong friendship. That's because relationships remain the currency of business.

In a world increasingly driven by algorithms, automation and AI, human connection has become even more valuable.
Networking isn't about collecting contacts. It's about understanding people, listening to their ambitions and challenges, and then connecting the dots where you can add value.

The most successful people I know are often the most generous connectors. They open doors, share opportunities and actively look for ways to help others succeed.

As PR professionals, we're uniquely positioned to do exactly that.
We sit at the intersection of sectors, communities, media, businesses and leaders. We have visibility across networks that others don't. When we use that position to elevate others, everybody benefits.

So while headlines and coverage may be the visible output of PR, the real magic often happens behind the scenes.

A conversation. An introduction. A connection.
Sometimes that's the most powerful form of influence we can create.”
